Morphine is a naturally occurring opioid derived from the opium poppy and is one of the oldest and most widely used medications for severe pain. It’s commonly used in hospital settings or for chronic pain management (including cancer-related pain). It works by binding strongly to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, reducing pain perception and producing sedation. Morphine comes in both immediate-release and extended-release forms, and while effective, it carries a high risk of dependence, tolerance, and respiratory depression. In non-medical markets, it’s less commonly sought than oxycodone but still present, usually diverted from prescriptions or medical supplies.
